MUSIC THEORY
Have you ever wanted to learn more about how music works? Perhaps you would like to improve your compositional skills or work towards a graded music theory examination?
Improving your knowledge of the theoretical elements of music may make give you an enlightening insight into music itself, bringing you greater pleasure from this most interesting of art forms.
Claire has experience of teaching music theory to groups and individuals of varying ages and abilities in schools, privately and for the Yorkshire Young Musicians project. She has had success with students in examinations up to Grade 8 level and is familiar with the requiments and marking criteria for both ABRSM and Trinity College examinations, the latter for which she is herself a theory examiner.
Theoretical music is traditionally taught on paper, however you may wish to explore in it a more practical way using your own instrument and previous knowledge of music.
I received the results from my end of 2nd Year musicianship tests and scored the best in my year, achieving more than 90% in both the harmony and aural elements! My teacher was highly impressed and when asked, I told him quite rightly that it was all down to Claire Holdich, my theory teacher at YYM. This year I completed my musicianship specialisms in Music for Voices and Further Baroque Counterpoint, scoring 1sts once again. Thank you, Claire, for all your hard work, expertise and support, which has facilitated and inspired a love of, and success in, all things theory.

These are directly linked to the theory exercises in ABRSM practical examinations, however contain information that maybe useful to anyone wanting to improve their understanding of music theory.
